What Are Smarter Cities? / Make Your City Smarter / Cities to Watch

  • 1. My city has exciting programs to enhance its sustainability but wasn't included in your survey because it was too small.  Does Smarter Cities profile smaller towns in its Cities to Watch?
  • We are happy to cover programs in cities of all sizes in our Cities to Watch module. And we encourage you to contribute your own stories about your town by becoming an OnEarth Citizen Reporter.
  • 2. Can you give me an example of something my city can do to be considered as a city to watch?
  • Cites on the Smarter Cities “watch list” demonstrate innovation and forward thinking across a wide range of programs and initiatives, such as the Partnership for a Green City in Louisville, Kentucky or the Green Summit, an event that welcomes community participation in environmental planning for Reno, Nevada.

Cleaning up abandoned brownfields (former industrial or commercial sites with possible environmental issues), and developing them into sustainable places a city can use again is one example of something cities are doing with great success across the country. Brownfield redevelopment is an important priority for Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where more than 64 sites have been revitalized since 1990, with plans for more improvement ahead. You can learn about how to redevelop brownfields at the EPA Brownfields and Land Revitalization website, which also includes success stories about how cities and states around the country are making a clean new start with some of the most polluted lands of the past.
