Union Township is a small city situated in the Highlands Preservation Area of New Jersey, with firm restrictions on future development.

One-third of the township is made up of open space, with two streams classified as "unusually pristine." The city prides itself on its preservation of the environment, and in January 2009 Mayor Anthony Terrezza and the Department of Public Works launched a green blog, the 2009 Green Initiative, updated at least weekly with "eco tips" covering emissions, recycling, energy, food and nonprofits. The link to the blog takes the top center spot on the city's home website.
