CityStories / City Profiles / Small Cities / Mountain View, California
Located in Silicon Valley just outside the San Francisco Bay Area, Mountain View is home to many high-tech companies—including Google and Intuit—whose local contributions have been significant in the shaping of the community. Thanks to an agreement between the city and Google, Mountain View is one of the first cities in the U.S. to have a no-cost, citywide WiFi network.
Green-minded Google, which employs approximately 6,000 people in Mountain View, runs a biodiesel shuttle system used by more than 1,500 employees a day between the company's headquarters and nearby San Francisco and the East Bay, and it supplies free bicycles and hybrid cars for local travel. For the rest of the city, there are stops for the VTA (light rail and bus) and Caltrain (a bullet train that runs through the Bay Area) at Centennial Plaza in downtown Mountain View.
In January 2008, Mayor Tom Means created the Environmental Sustainability Task Force, a group of more than 65 community volunteers working to meet the State of California's greenhouse gas emissions reduction requirements, which include lowering emissions by 80 percent of 1990 levels by 2050. In the more immediate term, the group has presented recommendations to City Council that will result in emission reductions of 5 percent of 2005 levels by 2012.
In 2007, Mountain View joined ICLEI's Local Governments for Sustainability—an international coalition of local governments addressing environmental issues—and signed the U.S. Mayor's Climate Protection Agreement. Much of the city's fuel for electricity comes from renewable sources such as hydropower, solar power and wind, and Mountain View offers rebates and tax credits for energy conservation.
