February 2011 Update: Boulder has been named a 2011 Smarter City for Transportation. The City of Boulder has also been a pioneer in green building since 1980 when it adopted its Energy Options Program.

This program was the predecessor to its current Green Points Building Program, which was created in 1996 as the first mandated municipal residential building code in the country. The City of Boulder Green Points Building Program helps residents find green products and sustainable building materials, recycle construction debris, and improve indoor air quality through workshops, training and other resources. Points for the program are based on materials, like the use of Forest-Stewardship-Council-certified wood, as well as waste management and high-efficiency fixtures.
