Most of Washington's fuel for electricity comes from clean, renewable hydropower, the process of which emits almost no air-quality-damaging emissions after construction of the dam.

Because most of the city's air-damaging carbon emissions come from transportation and city operations, local freight shortline Tacoma Rail, run by Tacoma Public Utilities, has been outfitting its locomotives with idle-reduction technologies, "eco-tip super-stack" fuel injectors and ultra-low sulfur diesel. These changes have drastically reduced particle pollution and emissions of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxides.
