Chesapeake adapted eight and a half miles of the former Virginia Route 17 into a multi-use trail for walkers, bicyclists, horseback riders, naturalists and wildlife enthusiasts.
The Dismal Swamp Canal Trail runs alongside the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway/Dismal Swamp Canal, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Dismal Swamp Tract of the Cavalier Wildlife Management Area.
